The Evolution of Men’s Watches

Men’s watches haven’t always been worn on the wrist. And they definitely haven’t always been so functional and technical. Today, there is a watch for every occasion and budget. So where did the concept of men’s watches come from? Here’s a timeline of the evolution of men’s watches. 1500-1600: Clock-watches: Worn around the neck or attached to clothing, clock-watches were made in Europe as a fusion between a watch and a clock. These watches only had an hour hand, but this early form was not believed to be used to tell time. Instead, it was a novelty item for the elite. 1600-1657: Pocket-watches: During this time, watches evolved into the round, flat shape they are today and were worn inside a man’s pocket. The timekeeping mechanism during this time was a key that was inserted into the back of the pocket-watch and wound. 1657-1850: Major advancements: To increase accuracy, many advancements were made during this period of time. First, the balance spring made the beat of the balance wheel resistant to any disturbance. Then during the Enlightenment era, temperature compensation and chronometers helped combat errors from changes in the elasticity in the balance spring. 1850-1900: Mass production: Watches were no longer solely assembled in watchmaking shops. Now, interchangeable parts allowed for the mass production of watches. Also, keyless winding was created. 1900-1950: Wristwatches & Better materials: During this period, innovations were made in the production of stronger, more efficient materials. Due to soldiers in WWI needing access to watches while their hands were occupied, bulky wristwatches were created. 1969-Today: Quartz & Radio-controlled watches: Over the past 40 years, huge strides have been made in men’s watches. With the invention of electric, quartz and radio-controlled watches, they became far more accurate. To suit changing trends, watches are now much lighter and sleeker, and they come in various forms and styles.
