Treatment with Amlodipine and Its Side Effects
Amlodipine (brand names Norvasc, Istin) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or chest pain (angina). Aamlodipine 5mg is a long-acting calcium channel blocker used as an anti-hypertensive and in the treatment of angina. Like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine acts by relaxing the smooth muscle in the arterial wall, decreasing peripheral resistance and hence reducing blood pressure; in angina it increases blood flow to the heart muscle. The most common amlodipine side effects is fluid retention and edema, more common at higher doses. This is a side effect shared with many other medication in the calcium channel blocker class, but is especially common with amlodipine. Headache is another particularly common and bothersome amlodipine side effect. Other listed common amlodipine side effects include palpitations, nausea, dizziness, flushing, fatigue, and dizziness. Overall except for peripheral edema amlodipine is usually well tolerated.
